Discover Kanazawaen, a captivating café residing in the heart of Yokohama, where tradition harmonizes beautifully with modern flair. Nestled at 46 Shibacho in Kanazawa Ward, this unique establishment is steeped in history, having been transformed from a historic ryokan (inn) that once hosted notable figures such as poet Yosano Akiko. This quaint café opened its doors in 2020, embracing its past while inviting a new generation to experience its charm.

Stepping inside Kanazawaen feels like entering a serene enclave away from the bustle of city life. The café showcases its storied history through its beautifully preserved wooden architecture, which has earned it the designation of a registered tangible cultural property in Japan. As you stroll through the premises, you can glimpse remnants of its former life—glorious bathing rooms and traditional guest rooms that whisper tales of yesteryears. The ambiance is tranquil, ideal for those seeking a cozy retreat for a moment of reflection or casual conversation.

The café’s design elegantly contrasts its Western-style first floor, complete with cozy tables and chairs, and the more traditional tatami-matted second floor that offers striking views of the surrounding area. Many visitors have expressed the desire to linger longer, tempted by the peaceful atmosphere that almost beckons for an afternoon nap.

But the true essence of Kanazawaen lies in its delightful menu. Patrons rave about the delectable brunch and lunch options, which feature seasonal delights such as the must-try sakura tart. As one visitor noted, it’s a hidden gem in Yokohama that combines a love for Japanese history and architecture with a delicious selection of treats.

Stopped here on out way to Yokohama sea paradise, and it was a perfect morning put stop! Very quiet and peaceful. We had matcha and sat in one of the traditional rooms upstairs. It was really lovely, a fantastic atmosphere, and a really great view! The staff were really friendly too! We definitely want to come back here if we're in the area again. The only thing I would warn you about would be that it doesn't look open if you are a foreigner who can't read the sign ^^' you do have to go in, change into slippers and then take a right down the hall to get to the room where you order your food. At that point you can choose to eat in that room, with more modern cafe decor, or in the more traditional rooms upstairs.

The cafe is in a beautiful traditional japanese building located nearby Uminokoen. Hard to think such a peaceful and hidden gem exist in Yokohama! A must visit spot for people interested in Japanese history and architecture. The cafe offers delicious brunch / lunch meals and amazing tarts, including seasonal options such as sakura tart. The cafe also allows dogs inside, plus has an amazing option to let the dog’s run around in the back garden after the meal. Definitely a place to visit again!
